未離歐者戰後無跡。 Those that didn't leave Europe were wiped out in the wars.

My grandparents were all Jewish. My parents are/were secular, non-religious or anti-religious Jews. And I... well, I have no religion at all! 我祖先是猶太人,但我本人不是。

I'll just list some of my ancestors here, so one can try them in search engines.

  1. My FATHER Benjamin Herzel Jacobson, 18 Jul 1929 - 25 Sep 1990. Grave.

    1. My grand FATHER David Lyon Jacobson, born Jersey City, NJ, USA 1892, married 1921, died Pittsburgh, PA, USA 03/06/1932

      1. My great grand FATHER Jacob Jacobson,

        1890 United States Census destroyed.

Jacob Jacobson, United States Census, New Jersey, 1900 Birth Date: May 1866, Marital Status: Married, Years Married: 17, Marriage Year (Estimated): 1883, Immigration Year: 1880. Owned own house, Dry goods merchant, can read and write and speak English.

      2. My great grand MOTHER Dora Hendelman

Dora Jacobson in household of Jacob Jacobson, "United States Census, 1900" Birth Date: Jul 1860; Years Married: 17, Marriage Year (Estimated): 1883, Immigration Year: 1880

Dora Jacobson in household of Jacob Jacobson, "United States Census, 1910", Birth Year (Estimated): 1865, Immigration Year: 1884

Dora Jacobson, "United States Census, 1920", New Jersey. Widowed. Immigration Year: 1890, Birth Year (Estimated): 1860.

Dora Hendelman in entry for David Jacobson, "New Jersey, Births and Christenings, 1660-1980" a Dora Hendelman (at mother's age 32 (so born 1859), father Jacob Jacobson, age 26 (so born 1865)) had a son, David Jacobson, Birth Date: 24 May 1891 Birthplace: Jersey City, Hudson, New Jersey. (She also had an earlier son, Beno, with similar parents' age ranges listed.)

My second cousin, Kevin Engleman says (9/2013)

My father [MIT MATHLAB etc.] Carl and your father were first cousins. Specifically: My father's Mother, Ella, was a sister of your father's father.

Here is a cut-and-paste from my mother [Doris] -- it may create more questions than it answers: "All I can say about Hendelman is that it was spelled Handelman with an umlaut on the first "a" (pronounced Hendelman), and is the name the family crossed the Atlantic with. The family lore, possibly apocryphal, is that some first-grade teacher in Baltimore heard it as Engelman, and that stuck. For some. It became other variations in other branches, e.g., Endelman in the case of the woman I visited in Newton whose married name was Marjorie Lees. A woman who lives around the corner from me comes from a, maybe, Edelman branch, etc.."

OK, so... Ella Jacobson in household of Jacob Jacobson, "United States Census, 1900"

Benjamin Engelman, "United States Census, 1930" shows son Carl and Mother-in-law Dora Jacobson living with them in Baltimore!

Ella == Eleanor Engelman, "United States Census, 1940"

2023/5/14: Another relative told me "Ella's sister is Etta, and Etta's son is Bob Solovay, the math guy."

      2. My great grand MOTHER

My great grandmother Ida Bloomenblatt / Bloomenblett / Blumenblat, Born ~1884

Mount Judah Cemetery records for all four relatives.

My Mom says: "Btw, you never added the 5th offspring of Benny and Ida Blumenblatt -- Gloria Personick -- to that part of the tree." Elderly Peekskill couple celebrates multiple milestones together, 2021.

        My Mom continues (3/2021):

Aunt Gloria is my mother's baby sister, born at the same time my own mother was married -- she was only about 9 months old when my own mom, her older sister had her first baby, my brother Arthur.) I myself was just 90. (My grandmother had five children, I don't know of any other survivors.)

I have the fondest memories of dearest Gloria, only five years older than myself. An earliest memory is that she taught me how to draw at a very young age. She was so interested always in art. And her home, that we finally visited in the summer of 2017, was filled with beautiful Chinese vases and lovely objects, and a fine painting that she said Gary had found, and had given to her because he knew she would love it. Our family's kids spent summers in the Catskills and Gloria would come up for a few days or weeks, and would be like one of my mom's kids. During her teenage time there were a few more summer memories of fun -- until the time when she was needed to work in my grandparents' candy store.

But then suddenly the war was over, and Gloria brought George up to the hotel we were at. And he was sweet and so charming. (And I had an immediate crush on him.) And then they were married. I was 14 at their wedding. (Uncle George is a wonderful dancer.)

Research tip: Often siblings got their Social Security numbers at the same time, so add or subtract 1 to find unknown relatives...
