My experience connecting my Kenwood TH-F7E transceiver to my GNU/Linux computer:
I used the IW6PRV MAX232 interface. Sound can be also had at the same time from the tip and base of the smaller plug.
If you are going to use a USB to serial adapter, make sure you buy one that supports the serial voltages correctly, as mentioned in usb-serial.txt in the Linux documentation tree.
I was at least able to get and set the frequency of the TH-F7E using the Debian package of Hamlib.
(2004:) Hamlib's rigmem program didn't work though yet.
